Headless e-commerce
in Shopify Plus

What is headless eCommerce?
Headless eCommerce is an architecture in which the presentation layer (frontend) is separated from the business logic and data layer (backend). In a traditional, monolithic e-commerce system all three layers are tightly coupled:
- Presentation layer — what the user sees: the storefront, product pages, cart
- Processing layer — order logic, payments, inventory management
- Database — storage of products, customers, order history
In headless architecture, the frontend and backend communicate via API, giving developers complete freedom to build the presentation layer with any technology stack.
How does headless eCommerce work?
In the headless approach, developers use Shopify as the "head" — the commerce engine handling orders, payments, products and customers — while building a custom frontend using modern frameworks such as React, Next.js, Vue or Nuxt.
Shopify provides the Storefront API (GraphQL), which enables retrieval of product data, cart creation, checkout handling and customer management from any frontend stack. The three-layer architecture looks like this:
- Storefront layer — custom frontend (React, Next.js, mobile app)
- Service layer — Shopify Storefront API, GraphQL, webhooks
- Back-office — Shopify Plus admin panel, product and order management
Headless architecture – benefits
- Omnichannel — one Shopify backend, many frontends: web store, mobile app, kiosk, smart TV
- Faster page load — SSR/SSG with Next.js can significantly improve Core Web Vitals compared to standard Shopify themes
- Better UX — consistent shopping experiences regardless of channel and device
- Mobile-first — dedicated mobile versions or native apps using the same backend
- Greater security — separating frontend and backend code reduces the attack surface
- Technical freedom — the ability to choose any frontend framework without platform restrictions
When should you use headless architecture?
Headless commerce is a solution for mid-to-large companies. It is worth considering when:
- Data needs to be displayed across multiple platforms simultaneously (web, mobile, IoT)
- Full freedom in choosing frontend technologies is required
- Native mobile apps sharing the same product catalogue are planned
- Standard Shopify themes cannot achieve the desired performance or visual goals

Headless commerce is not for everyone. For stores with smaller budgets or without a dedicated development team, standard Shopify Plus themes offer excellent value without the infrastructural complexity of headless.
Shopify headless – what you need to know
Shopify provides two main tools for headless commerce:
Storefront API — a GraphQL API enabling you to build a custom frontend shopping experience. It handles products, collections, carts, checkout and customers.
Hydrogen — Shopify's React-based framework for building headless storefronts. Oxygen is the cloud hosting for Hydrogen apps, available to Shopify Plus stores.
Shopify headless commerce – pros
- Faster page loading through server-side rendering (SSR) and static site generation (SSG)
- Configurable URLs for better SEO
- Richer customer experiences with full control over UI/UX
- Multi-language and multi-market support without compromise
- Omnichannel implementation from a single data source
- Faster time-to-market for new frontend features
Shopify headless commerce – cons
- Shopify App Store apps cannot be installed plug-and-play — API integration is required
- Higher implementation costs — requires an experienced developer or agency specialising in headless
- Greater system complexity — more components to manage and maintain
- Longer deployment time compared to standard Shopify Plus
Brands using Shopify Plus headless
Headless commerce on Shopify Plus is the choice of global premium brands: Allbirds, Kotn, Babylist, ILIA, Victoria Beckham Beauty, Chilly's, Staples, FIGS, Bols, Peloton and many others. They share a common denominator — the need for unique, high-performance shopping experiences that standard themes could not deliver.
Summary
Headless eCommerce in Shopify Plus is a powerful tool for companies that need maximum technical flexibility and are prepared for higher implementation costs. For companies with simpler requirements, traditional Shopify Plus offers great capabilities at significantly lower complexity.
